In humanitarian demining an area have to be 100% cleared from mines (or actually 99.6% according to the standard set by the United Nations for humanitarian demining). Some methods used to detect mines:

  • Sweeping the are using metal detectors
  • Probing the ground with a stick
  • Mine detection dogs

In military mine clearance speed is often vital. It is important to quickly create a path through a mined area, and casualties from undiscovered mines are acceptable. Some methods used to "clear" a path:

  • Mechanical demining
  • Carpet bombing
  • Bangalore torpedoes
  • Mine-clearing line charges
  • Burning of vegetatio
